Hands on Ecology would suit current and new volunteers working on restoration projects, those wanting to learn site assessments, those wanting to run other projects and those who are undertaking NZQA papers in plant identification and weed identification, pest management or plant nursery work.
This is also a great basis for people wanting to work in restoration or horticulture.
All courses will be held at Kaipatiki Project – 17 Lauderdale Road, Birkdale.
Week 1: Thursday 25 Oct 9am – midday

- Identifying restoration opportunities and issues in urban reserve
- Kauri habitat protection
- Plant identification
- Using iNaturalist for recording data and plant ID
Week 2: Thursday 1 Nov 9am – midday
- Native plant identification
- Pest monitoring
- Pest signs
- Rat and possum pest control
Week 3: Thursday 8th Nov 9am – midday
- Native and weeds
- Plant identification
- Seed collection best practice
Week 4: Thursday 15th Nov 9am – midday
- Leaf litter
- Direct seeding
- Site identification
- Seed collection and processing.
Week 5: Thursday 22nd Nov 9am – midday
- Climbers and epiphytes
- Natives and weeds
Week 6: Thursday 29th Nov 9am – midday
- Native ground covers
- Weed identification
- Bug identification
Week 7: Thursday 6th Dec 9am – midday
- Ground covers
Week 8: Thursday 13th Dec 9am – midday
- Riparian forest structures
- Selecting plants for stream side restoration
- Water testing
Shared kai after the last session with the nursery volunteers.
Terms and Conditions:
Course registration closes 24 hours before the course starts, unless it is full prior to this. Therefore please book early to avoid disappointment. We do not accept walk ins on the day for our courses. Please register and pay before the start of the course.
Refund Policy – Courses
If you cancel a course booking five (5) days before the start of the course, we will give you a full refund.
If you cancel a course booking between five (5) days and one (1) day before the start of a course, we will give you a 50% refund.
If you cancel your booking on the day of the course, you are not entitled to a refund.

Kaipatiki Project reserves the right to cancel any course at any time. We will endeavour to give you as much notice as possible before we cancel a course. If we cancel a course, you will receive a full refund.
