Karamū (Coprosma robusta) is one of New Zealand’s most widespread coprosma species. It typically grows as a small tree beneath the forest canopy or as a rapidly growing shrub in regenerating scrubland. As with all coprosmas, its stems bear leaves and branches in opposite pairs. The species is dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants. Its berries are a food source for birds—particularly silvereyes and starlings—which help disperse its seeds.
