EcoFest: On-Farm Composting for Rural Properties

Hosted by Hibiscus Coast Zero Waste and the Kaipara Regen Farming Group

Join us for an informative event on creating high-quality, affordable compost for gardens and mulching trees in collaboration with City to Farm.

City to Farm will provide bokashi-composted food scraps, biochar, equipment, and will layer the materials. Rural property owners will supply woody mulch, compost containment, and additional help. You will learn about four different on-farm composting methods: Johnson-Su, S.P.I.C.E, Swale, and Layered.

Following the presentations at the Waitoki Community Hall from 9-10am, there will be an option for a field trip to two nearby farms to observe their composting systems. Please note that the farm visits require rugged shoes and good walking strength. The field trips are not suitable for small children, the hearing impaired, or those with physical disabilities. It is important that participants attend the presentations before going on the field trips. Attendees are welcome to stay after noon to speak with the farmers.

Please note that Waitoki Community Hall will be accessible via bus, and not the farm visits.
