Indicator Species Biodiversity Monitoring

We continue to monitor native indicator species, TitiwaiGlowworms, Kākahi-Freshwater Mussels and, in partnership with Community Waitākere, surveying Pekapeka tou roaLong Tailed Bats.

Our goal is to engage with local community, iwi and stakeholders to increase our understanding
of present populations, including training volunteers and partners in the appropriate best practice to undertake initial baseline surveys and conduct regular ongoing monitoring of specific populations once identified.

Informed by local Māori knowledge shared with us, we now implement an old technique to support
kākahi populations after storms. Post flooding, we have gone to downstream sites to pick up stranded mussels on the banks and put them back in safer zones upstream.
