Te Ara Awataha Planting Day

Te Ara Awataha | Northcote

THIS MATARIKI: Join us along the unique, Te Ara Awataha greenway in Northcote, as we plant along the stream edge during Matariki. Planting trees is a big part of Matariki, so add this to your list of Matariki events and celebrations, and don't forget to invite your friends and family along!

This is your chance to dig in, get some native plants into the ground, and make a difference in your local community. The ecosystems along Te Ara Awataha are mostly still young, and each planting we do here makes a huge difference: You'll really be able to see your impact growing in these reserves. The plants you put in the ground this season will strengthen the precious native ecosystem, stabilise river banks, provide habitat to local wildlife, beautify the community, and capture carbon from our atmosphere.

Thank you to our event funders: Eke Panuku and AC Healthy Waters.

Our Work at Te Ara Awataha

What a great way for you to make a positive impact on the environment, right when the planet really needs you! Volunteering at Te Ara Awataha contributes to 5 of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals:

3: Good Health and Well-Being 11. Sustainable Cities and Communities 13. Climate Action 14. Life Below Water 15. Life on Land

Northcote's new greenway runs through the heart of the town, following the newly daylighted Te Ara Awataha stream and connecting a number of separately pre-existing local reserves together.

Expert ecologists from Kaipātiki Project have been monitoring the stream and surrounding bush since the daylighting began in 2019. We have been actively monitoring, regenerating and protecting the native ecosystems since, with the generous help of numerous dedicated volunteers from our local community.

Would you like to get involved?

Regeneration of this unique space continues throughout the year, well beyond planting season. In fact, planting days are just the cherry on top, where regular regeneration days are the whole cake! Join us for "the whole cake" and see what it takes to keep our local ecosystems thriving:

Te Ara Awataha Regular Regeneration Days

These events are a great opportunity to connect with the community and with nature, while becoming a highly knowledgeable, seasoned-hand at native bush regeneration.
