6 November 2024

November 2024:

Kaipātiki Project gathers to bid farewell to Janet Cole, who has served as Kaihautū | Chief Executive for over eight transformative years. This celebration is more than just a farewell—it is a tribute to Janet’s legacy of community-driven environmental action and her visionary work in building a sustainable future. Her leadership, grounded in collaboration and resilience, has been instrumental in expanding Kaipātiki Project's reach and impact.

Building a Foundation of Community-Led Environmental Action

Janet’s journey in environmental leadership has been one of growth and community empowerment. From her start in urban sustainability work at the innovative "Keep Waitākere Beautiful" through to her leadership at Kaipātiki Project, Janet has consistently championed projects that connect people with their local ecosystems. She has guided Kaipātiki Project through some of its most ambitious environmental goals, always centering community voices and fostering partnerships across iwi, government agencies, and local groups.

Milestones in Sustainable Initiatives

One of Janet’s most notable contributions was her role in Te Ara Awataha, an inspiring initiative focused on restoring the Awataha Stream and creating green spaces in Northcote. This project, which included the collaboration of iwi and local government partners, stands as a model for ecological regeneration and community engagement. Under Janet’s leadership, projects like these have turned sustainable ideals into impactful realities, emphasizing the importance of local action in the face of global environmental challenges.

A Legacy of Empowering People

Janet’s leadership has always been about empowering others to take meaningful action. By expanding Kaipātiki Project’s volunteer base and fostering a collaborative environment, she has helped build a thriving community network of over a thousand dedicated volunteers each year. Her commitment to integrating Mātauranga Māori principles and respecting Te Tiriti o Waitangi has paved the way for a more inclusive and resilient approach to environmental care, one that brings people together with a shared purpose.

Inspiring Future Generations

Janet’s farewell event was filled with connection and appreciation, capturing her influence as a mentor and leader. Many of the photos from the event reflect not only a celebration but also the legacy of collaboration and connection she has left behind. While her role with Kaipātiki Project may have ended, Janet’s impact will continue to resonate through every sapling planted, every stream revitalized, and every person inspired to protect the environment.
