Carex gem - Carex geminata (swamp sedge)

Carex geminata, commonly known as Cutty Grass, is a robust native New Zealand sedge recognised for its coarse, sharp-edged green foliage. Growing 50–100 cm tall, it is a reliable species for environmental planting, particularly wetland and riparian restoration projects.

Thriving in moist to wet soils, C. geminata has a moderate growth rate and performs well in a wide range of ecological settings. This species is not really suitable as a garden plant because of its active propagation by rhizomes.

It is wind and frost-tolerant, and while it prefers sheltered sites, it can withstand some coastal exposure.

Widespread throughout Aotearoa, especially in wetlands and damp lowland areas, this sedge plays an important role in erosion control, habitat restoration, and stabilising stream margins. Its durability and adaptability make it a valuable choice for both large‑scale ecological work and naturalised planting.
