Agathis australis, widely known as kauri, is a conifer belonging to the family Araucariaceae. It is native mainly to areas north of 38°S in the northern part of New Zealand’s North Island.
This species is New Zealand’s largest tree by volume (though not the tallest), reaching heights of up to 50 m (160 ft) and emerging above the main forest canopy. It has smooth bark and slender, narrow leaves. Other names used to distinguish A. australis from other Agathis species include southern kauri and New Zealand kauri.
