Pittosporum tenuifolium (Kōhūhū or Black Matipo) is a fast-growing, hardy evergreen shrub or small tree, endemic and widespread across New Zealand. It thrives in sun or shade and adapts well to wind, drought, frost, and coastal conditions.
With shiny light-green wavy-edged leaves and reddish-brown branchlets, kōhūhū produces fragrant dark red to purple-black flowers in spring. The flowers are rich in nectar and release a honey-like scent in the evening, especially in damp conditions, attracting moths and other native night pollinators.
Small black fruits follow flowering. Kōhūhū is excellent for hedging, shelter, riparian planting, and forest edge revegetation — especially on lower terrace slopes.
