This species is a compact, bushy small tree with numerous thick, leathery oval leaves, each with subtle bumps or small lobes along the edges. It is naturally found in Northland and the Auckland region, typically growing in warm, humid lowland habitats.
The leaves measure 7–14 cm in length and 4–10 cm in width. The midrib remains green, while the network of veins is far more prominent on the underside, giving the back of the leaf a slightly textured appearance.
Its tiny yellowish flowers appear loosely in clusters along the twigs, often not very conspicuous. These are followed by purple fruits, which may attract birds and help in seed dispersal.
The tree generally prefers well-drained soil, tolerates partial shade, and contributes to the structure of coastal or lowland forest edges. Its dense foliage also provides shelter for insects and small wildlife.
