Aristotelia serrata, known as wineberry or makomako/mako in Māori, is a fast-growing deciduous small tree or shrub native to New Zealand’s North, South, and Stewart Islands. It typically reaches about 10 m in height with a trunk up to 30 cm thick. The bark is pale brown and smooth with flat lenticels, while the long, slender branches spread outward and the young branchlets are reddish-brown and softly hairy.
