Planchonella costata is a small coastal tree native to the northern parts of New Zealand’s North Island and to Norfolk Island in Australia. In New Zealand it is known as tawapou (Māori: “tawāpou”), while on Norfolk Island it is commonly called bastard ironwood. The specific epithet costata derives from the Latin costatus (“ribbed”), referring to the distinctly raised primary veins on the leaves.
