Toatoa-Haloragis erecta

Haloragis erecta is a hardy, perennial herb that is endemic to Aotearoa. Commonly known as shrubby haloragis, toatoa, fireweed or erect seaberry, it is found throughout the country from lowlands to elevations of around 500 metres.

This resilient native grows with opposite, coarsely toothed leaves and distinctive square, reddish‑maroon stems. It flowers throughout the year, producing delicate red, pink and yellow blooms that support a range of native insects.

  • Soil moisture: Dry to moist conditions
  • Habit: Tough, adaptable and ideal for restoration planting or dry, exposed sites
