A wicking bed is a raised garden bed with a water reservoir at the bottom that ‘wicks’ water up through the soil to the plant roots. These beds use 50% less water, reducing the need to water every day, making these systems extremely resilient to drought.  With this season’s predicted El Nino dry summer, we are expanding the number of wicking beds at our site to grow food this season.  

Thanks to support from Upper Harbour Local Board, we will be making some of these Wicking beds available to local seniors and intergenerational ethnic communities who may like to take on caring for one over the summer.  The aim is to build community connections, wellbeing and climate resilience.  

We will run a series of repeat workshops over the next few weeks covering how to set up and maintain these beds, with one workshop delivered in Mandarin.
