Mahi Tākaro with Harko Brown

WORKSHOP | Mahi tākaro and traditional Māori play strengthen bodies, build social connection, uphold whakapapa and tikanga, and spark creativity. Come join Harko Brown (teacher & Māori games expert) as he creates aro-tākaro—implements of play—using natural resources from the park. Enjoy weaving, learning, and playing the traditional games connected to these taonga, with plenty of low‑impact participation and cultural sharing for everyone.

The name for Hobsonville Point, Onekiritea, refers to the clay once used for traditional activities such as crafting clay flutes and creating artistic impressions of hineoneone on tree trunks. We will experience these practices and the associated game rituals, and we will also craft the iconic wading birds found in this area using harakeke.
