Soil Spirit: Art Meets Earth at Engine Bay Gardens

Something magical is growing at Engine Bay Gardens, and it’s not just in the soil.

Robbi the artist 2

We’ve had the privilege of working with local artist Robbi Carvalho, whose mural Soil Spirit now graces the portacom as part of the Green Guardian Project. Robbi is a visual storyteller whose work celebrates the feminine and our deep connection to nature. Her hybrid beings, painted across city walls, carry powerful messages about climate change, transformation and care for the Earth.

This mural is more than just art. It’s a reflection of our vision:
That everyone's food needs are met from local sources.

Teaching garden produce

At Kaipātiki Project, we believe that building a sustainable edible garden is a circular process. It begins with improving soil fertility, planting strong seeds and nurturing plant health organically. We harvest and share nutrient-dense food with our community, save seeds for the next season and compost all organic materials, including food scraps, to return nutrients to the soil. This process not only feeds people, but also draws down carbon and helps reverse climate change.

Robbi began painting on 2 August, and our volunteers and interns helped prepare the space. She generously shared insights into her creative process and the community was invited to witness the mural unfold. The gathering was rich with connection, creativity and shared purpose.

As part of this journey, Robbi and our team also connected with Hobsonville Point Primary School, inviting students to engage with the mural and explore their relationship with nature. This is a special opportunity to spark curiosity and environmental awareness in young minds, right where art and ecology meet.

This collaboration beautifully links art with action. The mural now stands as a vibrant symbol of regeneration—right beside our Teaching Garden and Community Compost Hub.
