Whiria te Tangata – Weave the People Together
At Kaipātiki Project, volunteering isn’t just about lending a hand, it’s about growing something bigger together.
This Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the incredible people who show up rain or shine to plant native trees, restore local bush, care for our teaching gardens and help build a more sustainable future for all.
The theme “Whiria te Tangata – Weave the People Together” speaks to the heart of what we do. Every action – big or small – helps connect people to nature and to each other.

Nurturing Nature: Our Volunteers’ Impact
Each year, over 1,000 volunteers contribute their time and energy to Kaipātiki Project. Their collective efforts result in the propagation of more than 45,000 eco-sourced native plants annually, which are used to rejuvenate local reserves and support biodiversity across Auckland’s North Shore and beyond.
From hands on work in our native plant nurseries to engaging in bush restoration activities, our volunteers play a pivotal role in every aspect of our operations. Their contributions extend beyond physical tasks; They truly embody the spirit of community and care for the environment that lies at the heart of everything we do at Kaipātiki Project.
To all our volunteers
Thank you for your time, your care, and your commitment. You help make Kaipātiki thrive. And if you’ve ever thought about joining us – now is the perfect time to get involved.
Let’s keep weaving the strands of people, purpose, and planet – together.
Diverse Opportunities for Engagement
Kaipātiki Project offers a range of volunteer opportunities to suit various interests and schedules:
Native Plant Nurseries
At our Birkdale and Hobsonville Point sites, volunteers engage in activities such as propagating plants, potting seedlings and maintaining nursery spaces.
Teaching Gardens
Volunteers assist in our teaching gardens, helping to cultivate organic produce and educate the community about sustainable gardening practices.
Bush Restoration
Participating in restoration events, volunteers help remove invasive species, plant native flora and restore natural habitats.
Compost Hubs
Volunteers support our composting initiatives, turning organic waste into valuable resources for our gardens and community.
These opportunities not only contribute to environmental conservation but also provide volunteers with practical skills and a deeper connection to nature.
Why Our Volunteers Give Their Time
Our volunteers come from diverse backgrounds, united by a shared commitment to environmental sustainability. Their motivations include:
Making a Real Difference
Contributing to the restoration of native ecosystems and the fight against climate change.
Community Connection
Building relationships with like minded individuals and creating a sense of belonging.
Personal Growth
Gaining knowledge about native plants, ecology and sustainable practices.
