Kūmara Harvest Brings Community Together at Ngahuripoke Garden in Northcote

On the afternoon of Wednesday 9th April 2025, Kaipātiki Project team members Judith Rosamund, Teaching Garden Coordinator and Karla Macdonald, Community Activator had the joy of facilitating a small but meaningful kūmara harvest at the Kāinga Ora Ngahuripoke Community Garden in Northcote. 

KO Kumura Image.2This particular harvest may have been a quieter one, but it was no less special. Among those present was the ever enthusiastic Leo Fitzsimmons, one of many proud guardians of the Ngahuripoke Garden and Kāinga Ora clients. Leo’s infectious smile, positive energy and willingness to lend a hand are always a highlight at these events, his presence alone is enough to lift spirits and bring people together. 

He aroha whakatō, he aroha ka puta mai - If kindness is sown, then kindness you shall receive. 

Joining us also was Karen Allen, Kāinga Ora’s Community Development Manager for Community Engagement and Partnerships in Auckland – North and West. With sleeves rolled up the team set to work, harvesting kūmara with laughter and camaraderie flowing alongside the garden bed. 

By the end of the session the team had partially filled a 55-litre bucket, plenty to share among the Kāinga Ora Ngahuripoke harvesters and community. But beyond the harvest itself, the true success of the day lay in the connections made, the smiles shared and the collective spirit of growing food and friendship together.KO Kumura Image.8

As we reflect on the kaupapa of manaakitanga (hospitality and kindness), kotahitanga (unity) and the sharing of food as a powerful way to strengthen whanaungatanga (relationships), we are reminded of the importance of community-led action and support. 

One of the most well known whakataukī, this speaks to the value of collaboration, shared resources and the collective wellbeing of our communities. 

“Nāu te rourou, nāku te rourou, ka ora ai te iwi.”  With your food basket and my food basket, the people will thrive.
